Client Success Story - Dean Lindsey Construction
Dean Lindsey has been in the pole barn business for almost his entire life. He worked on his first pole barn with his stepdad and stepbrothers when he was just 8 years old! Since then, he has been in the business for over 40 years and completed over 1000 different pole buildings.
When I met Dean, he had no website…no Google My Business profile…no real online presence at all. And while he had been in the business for decades, he didn’t always know where his next job was coming from. He had a Facebook page, some local ads, and a good amount of referrals, but he knew he needed to take advantage of the internet and grow his presence online.
His goal? To never stress about when or where his next job was coming from.
We knew each other through a mutual friend in our church community. He was itching to get a website up and had heard that I built websites. I agreed to build a website for him and congratulated him on taking the first step to growing his business online! That’s a huge deal!
But putting a website up is only the first step. When we put his website up, it didn’t magically show up in front of people searching for “Oregon pole barn builders” on Google. I explained to him that he should also invest in some monthly SEO (search-engine optimization) services to make sure his new website actually gets seen and gets people calling him. Not fully understanding what that meant, he decided to just start with the website build.
Shortly after his website went LIVE, Dean called me up…
“Katlyn, I’m not getting any phone calls and no one sees my website.”
I explained to him that what he needed to get more calls, was to get his website in front of people online. To show up on Google, we needed to do some SEO work.
“What does that mean?”, he asked.
A VERY common question. And one I definitely didn’t do a good enough job explaining the first time we talked about it.
I explained to him that SEO involved putting extra work into his website to improve visibility and get it in front of more people. After all…if all it took was putting up a website to get calls, there would be no competition, and everyone’s phones would be buzzing. But the truth is, the 1st page of Google only has 10 spots, and ideally you want to be #1 on that 1st page. That’s the goal of SEO!
“Let’s do it”, he said. He didn’t care to know all of the details. He just wanted results.
Dean took a huge step in investing in online marketing to bring new customers into his business on a consistent basis!
Together, Dean and I put together a marketing strategy, including what cities he wanted to rank in. I gave him an idea of how competitive the area was so he could be prepared for some cities to take longer for his website to show up in than others.
After just 3 months*, Dean’s website was ranked #1 in a nearby city. Check it out for yourself →
Once his site hit #1, Dean started getting a ton of calls and emails! People were actually finding his website when they searched for his services and he was booking jobs because of that online exposure.
*Please note — depending on population size, competition, and other factors, time frame of results will vary.
This instilled confidence in the process and Dean was motivated to keep the ball rolling!
I showed him results, so we kept going. After that initial 3 month trial run, Dean committed to another 3 months and asked me to help him rank in other nearby cities where he also does work.
I expanded the SEO work to cover a larger radius, helping him get in front of customers in over a dozen more cities.
After 6 months of working together, things were going so well that Dean decided to have me keep up a regular SEO routine for his business.
But why? If he was already on the 1st page of Google and getting a ton of new business? Like exercise, consistency is key. After a few months, weeks, and sometimes only days of neglecting SEO work, your ranking on Google will fall. Just like if you don’t work out for months, you’ll lose traction in your health journey — gaining weight, losing stamina, or running into other health problems.
The last I talked to Dean, his business had picked up so much that he’s hired 2 guys to help him out (and still needs to find more)! If he can’t expand his crew, he said he would have to start turning jobs away because he’s fully booked!
What an awesome problem to have! Isn’t that what we all want for our business???
Dean invested in the online marketing tools needed to keep his phone ringing and his business growing.
This has helped to eliminate the stress that comes with worrying about where his next job was coming from. Now, he can put all of his energy into running his business and enjoying time with his family.
Guys, this is the stuff that I work so hard for! Helping people like you grow your business to places you never thought it could go! I hope you’re encouraged by Dean’s story. There are many just like his. The internet can be a powerful tool in getting your name out there and building a bigger customer base. So what are you waiting for? This can be YOUR story too! Let’s get to work.
